Hiking and Sightseeing in Bulgaria - Rhodope Mountains

 
The Rhodopes are a large mountain mass spread in the South-East of Bulgaria. Virgin pine forests, a lot of rivers and extraordinary rock figures are characteristic of this mountain. Our itinerary passes by way of several middle-height peaks, a number of unique natural phenomena, small cozy villages, old roman roads, cultural monuments.                                   
           

HIKING AND SIGHTSEEING IN THE RHODOPES

            Requirements
The hiking is usually done through forests at a height less than 2000 m/6560 ft. Tourists should be able to walk for 5 to 7 hours a day.

            Route
Day 1: Sofia to Plovdiv (150 km/93 miles):
A flight to Sofia. A small bus will take you from the Sofia Airport to the town of Plovdiv (166 m/544 ft). Overnight at Leipzig hotel (3 stars).
Day 2: Sightseeing of Plovdiv (Old Town - some old houses and churches and the Roman Amphitheater). Overnight at Leipzig hotel.
Day 3: Plovdiv to Bachkovo (35 km/22 miles):
Travel by small bus to the Bachkovo Monastery (400 m/1329 ft), which is the second biggest and important one in Bulgaria - 30km. Outing to the chalets Bezovo and Momina Salza (4-5h). Overnight at private lodgings in the village of Bachkovo.
Day 4: Bachkovo to Pamporovo (60 km/37 miles):
A small bus takes you to the world famous ski resort Pamporovo (1450 m/4755 ft). Optional visiting of the Snezhanka peak (1926 m/6315 ft) on foot - 4 hrs. There is a TV tower with a nice cafe at the top. Overnight at a private hotel.
Day 5: Pamporovo to Shiroka Luka (7 hrs):
You walk through beautiful coniferous forests to the Mecho grobe saddle (1500 m/4920 ft). Going downwards to the Shiroka Luka village (1100 m/3607 ft) follows. Overnight in private lodgings.
Day 6: Sightseeing of the church, museum and the old houses in the architectural reserve Shiroka Laka. Overnight in private lodgings.
Day 7. Shiroka Luka to Mugla (8 hrs):
Climbing to the Lednitsata chalet (1720 m/5640 ft) and the saddle Odabashiytsa (1850 m/6065 ft) and arrival at the Mugla village (1400 m/4590 ft). Overnight in private lodgings.
Day 8: Rest day. The volunteers can visit the beautiful valley of the Muglenska river. Overnight in private lodgings.
Day 9: Mugla to Trigrad (7 hrs):
Hiking through the Chamla village (1650 m/5410 ft) to the Trigrad village (1250 m/4100 ft). Overnight in private lodgings.
Day 10: Sightseeing of the cave "Devil's Throat". Free time. Overnight in private lodgings.
Day 11: Trigrad to Teshel (7 hrs):
Walking to the cave "Yagodinska" (1100 m/3607 ft) and sightseeing of the cave. Your end point for the day is the tourist hotel "Teshel" (700 m/2295 ft), where you spend the night.
Day 12: Outing along the Muglenska river in the nature reserve "Kotlinite". Overnight at the tourist hotel "Teshel".
Day 13: Teshel to Devin (8 hrs):
On the way to the Orpheus chalet (1190 m/3900 ft) you visit the nature reserve "Kastrakli" - 3,5 hrs. Hiking via the Hunt chalet (1400 m/4590 ft) to the Devin town (700 m/2295 ft) - 4,5 hrs. Overnight at private hotel.
Day 14: Visiting of some natural places of interest near Devin. Overnight at private hotel.
Day 15: Devin to Sofia (210 km/130 miles):
Travel to Sofia and a flight home.

    

Optimal season: May till October
Group size: min 1; max 15

REMARKS

Normally our company ensures:
     - full board;
     - Accompanying of the group by a foreign language speaking guide from Sofia to Sofia;
     - Transfer - from Sofia to Sofia;
     - Car for the luggage;
     - Overnight as mentioned in the program - hotels,
private lodgings (2-bed rooms).
